The Grand Duke 2020

Ernest’s theatre troupe are complaining of the impossibility of the marriage of Lisa and Ludwig due to the Grand Duke Rudolph’s insistence that every parson be summoned to discuss his own wedding. A plot to kill him, marked by the eating of sausage rolls as a secret signal, goes awry however when Ludwig unwittingly tells the Grand Duke’s detective, who accidentally gave him the signal by eating a sausage roll himself. The concept of a duel to legal death in Pfenig-Halbfenig is on its last day of being legally binding, having been law for one hundred years, which can be fought by picking cards. The highest card drawn wins, and the loser legally dies, relieving him of all titles, debts and property. Ludwig and Ernest duel for the right to not confess to Rudolph. The duel leaves Ernest dead and Ludwig confessing all to Rudolph, who does not want to die one bit. He decides to instead duels Ludwig and rig the duel so that Ludwig can win. This allows Ludwig to become the new Grand Duke of Pfenig-Halbpfenig, making Rudolph no longer a target and Ludwig the target of his own plot to kill the Grand Duke. However, this complicates matters further; Julia, Ernest’s leading lady, is contracted to play the heroine in everything, and hence must now become the new Grand Duchess, leaving Ludwig brokenhearted at the loss of his Lisa and Julia most put out at the ideas Ludwig holds of a good wife. Making it messier is the presence of Rudolph’s betrothed, Baroness Caroline von Krakenfeld, who won’t give up being a Grand Duchess so easily, not even with the knowledge of a childhood betrothal between Rudolph and the beautiful but poor Princess of Monte Carlo or the changing of her intended to Ludwig, because she marries the title, not the man. Ludwig, drunk on power, decides with his one day of being the Grand Duke to extend the legality of the legal duel for another hundred years, meaning Rudolph cannot “revive” and reclaim his title, and Ernest is trapped unable to live and marry Julia like he wants to. With Ernest and Rudolph trapped legally dead, Lisa and Julia left without the man they wanted to marry, and the Prince and Princess of Monte Carlo on their way, and far more Grand Duchesses than anyone can handle, will anyone set this mess right?
